My name is Kim

I'm profoundly moved by the popularity of mahjong in recent years. It's a game that promotes community and friendship while also challenging our social and tactical skills. Mahjong requires patience, strategy and a little bit of luck.

My journey with mahjong began at age 10, where a single tile sparked a lifelong obsession with the art of the game. My great auntie was visiting from Philly and she was bored so we went and bought a mahjong set to keep her entertained. I played throughout my teenage years with my group of friends from Hong Kong who kept me on my toes because let's face it, we are competitive!

My love of the game never waned, but it was rare to find people who also wanted to learn about this wonderful pastime of Chinese culture. Fast forward to 2020, the idea of hosting mahjong felt like a calling. I started teaching and hosting at the plant shop I owned. Watching students arrive at the "aha" moment where the tiles click is the best feeling as a teacher.

Sparrow Social was born from a simple goal and that is to share the heritage of Hong Kong style mahjong with my community. While there are many versions of mahjong out there, I feel it is incumbent upon myself to share my culture and the way I learned to play years ago.

Sparrow Social is more than a mahjong parlor. It is a collective space for those who seek friendship, communal spirit, learning and challenges. Our little micro social club will encompass more than mahjong. Let's read together, dine together and cultivate more art and opportunities to share space.

the mission

Sparrow Social is dedicated to sharing the traditional spirit of Hong Kong-style mahjong with the local community. My goal is to preserve this cultural heritage through curated events, but also create more intentional gatherings in the heart of Denver. Be it mahjong, book club, knitting or arts and crafts Sparrow Social is here to share space with those who seek connection.
